Make a Splash!

You’ve got a great kitchen. A Thermador stove, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, granite countertops, the works – your kitchen has it all. Or does it? Whether designing or remodeling your kitchen, don’t forget to give careful consideration to the backsplash that will “frame” your appliances. Gone are the days of humdrum backsplashes that were merely functional. Today’s backsplashes are not only utilitarian, but also versatile. And as we seem to be living in the era of “everything custom,” there are virtually endless options from which to choose.

Bold and beautiful metal backsplashes are a very popular choice because they clean easily, can be incredibly stylish and an enhancement option comes in the form of a sealer that will render your lovely splash virtually “fingerprintless.” Other options include: non-tarnishing copper sealer (for those who opt for copper splashes), custom cutouts for electrical outlets and even electrical outlet covers in copper or stainless in various sizes, patterns and finishes are available. There are also fold-up shelves, specialty railings, hooks and holders to conveniently and attractively house kitchen appliances that are frequently used.

Once you’ve decided what material you’d like your metal splash in, (some popular materials are stainless steel, copper, tin and brass) you are ready to consider finishes such as matte, mirrored or polished. Each finish results in a very different and appealing look, making it a decision that takes some time.

Next is all about 3-D. Pattern and texture options are phenomenal. For those who prefer faux finishes, the option of metallic finishes on stainless steel yields a very long list of choices. There are also embossed patterns such as woven, tree bark and leather to name just a few.
If you’ve looked at your metal options and haven’t found what you are looking for, you might want to consider natural tile. Many homeowners who want a country kitchen, a rustic look or even a Tuscan feel, tend to gravitate toward ceramic, porcelain or marble tile. These mediums tend to be earthier and are thought to loan a homey quality to a kitchen. All three options are resilient, easy to clean and come in a variety of colors, finishes and textures. And, if you like the idea of custom, you can even have original artwork transferred onto tile to make your backsplash truly one-of-a-kind.

Another thing that makes shopping for backsplashes fun - regardless of the material - is that there are no “hard and fast” design rules that govern them. Panels behind the range or sink give a highlighted effect while extending splash material to areas on either side of these appliances can make a smaller space seem larger by adding visual continuity. Of course, while rules don’t exist, there are some tips that may help achieve specific looks. For a traditional look, complementary colors or variations on a dominant color already in your kitchen are best. If you are looking for some pizzazz, go for contrast. Cherry wood cabinetry against stainless steel is a beautiful pairing of traditional and contemporary, while a checkerboard pattern that incorporates light and dark colors makes a statement all its own. If you desire a somewhat casual and comfortable atmosphere, rough finishes are the rule of thumb; if you prefer elegance, opt for slick shiny surfaces which tend to render a contemporary feel. Whatever your preference, something simple or something that is a work of art in its own rite, the options abound…so, get out there and make a splash!
