San Diego's
Crowning Seaside Resort Towns

Considered one of the finest beach destinations in the continental United States, San Diego, and its surrounding coastal communities, have strong appeal. Possibly the Mediterranean-like climate, lush tropical foliage and rugged mountain ranges which provide glorious backdrops to the areas scenic beaches and azure blue Pacific Ocean are what cast the allure and captivate the souls of those who visit California's southern-most region. Each San Diego beach town has its own distinctive persona and offers a unique experience.

The idyllic island of Coronado is connected to San Diego by a two-mile long bridge which stretches out over the San Diego Bay. Along with yacht clubs and turn of the century mansions, Coronado is renown for its pristine pure white sandy beaches, and legendary Hotel Del Coronado. The grand dame of California seaside destinations, the Hotel Del Coronado has been referred to over the years as one of the top 10 resorts in the world. Built in 1888, Hotel Del Coronado is a genuine American classic.  Also referred to as “The Palace on the Pacific,” the Hotel Del Coronado is Victorian architecture in grandeur. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and over the years, the resort has played host to presidents and royalty, as well as the rich and famous. It has also served as the film location for several movies, including “Some Like It Hot,” starring Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis.

Today, the Hotel Del Coronado continues to exude Old World charm, subtly integrated with modern conveniences. Along with 31 gorgeous acres, and an unrivaled beachfront location, the hotel has plenty to offer guests – luxurious room accommodations, full service spa, creative children and teen programs, and a variety of water sports activities – swimming at the beautiful beachside pool, surfing lessons and boogie boarding. Adjacent to the hotel is the Boathouse, which offers instruction and rentals for sailboats, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboats.

For those seeking solitude, Silver Strand Beach is just a short stroll south of the Hotel Del Coronado. The beaches are ideal for sunbathing, beachcombing and on a certain days, one can see dolphins and sea turtles swimming offshore. In the distance, there is the outline of Los Coronados, Mexico. Dining on the island, the Hotel Del Coronado’s Sheerwood, 1500 Ocean and The Crown Room (great Sunday brunch) are all good choices. For flip-flop casual, the Beach-N-Diner or The Fish Company are Coronado favorites. Off island in downtown San Diego try The Fish Market. The seafood market and restaurant offers a fresh catch daily and amazing views of the harbor.

For those who have kids that enjoy skateboarding, San Diego is home to world famous skateboarder Tony Hawk and The Tony Hawk Foundation. There are several great skate parks located throughout the area.

Mission and Pacific Beaches make up an area known as The Strand. This two-mile stretch of beach is considered the most popular in the city of San Diego, and draws large crowds year round. For those on a tight budget, Paradise Point Resort or The Beach Cottage Motel are truly incredible finds.

Heading northward along the stretch of endless miles of beautiful coastline is the
picturesque town of La Jolla, which translated from Spanish means “The Jewel.” The main attractions in this affluent seaside haven are the beaches. La Jolla Shores Beach is great for sunbathing, swimming, surfing and is known for its very wide beaches. Explore nearby La Jolla Cove which is picture-postcard perfect!  The cove has soft sandy beaches and gentle waves, and is an absolute paradise for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. The ocean water is so clear, marine life such as lobsters and octopi are easily visible. Children's Pool is a must see. The small, protected cove has been a designated safe harbor for nesting seals and sea lions (disturbing the natural habitat or swimming is prohibited here). Birch Aquarium at Scripps is also a worthwhile visit. Through interactive exhibits, the aquarium's goal is to educate and promote ocean conservation awareness. For the latest in surfboard equipment and surfing apparel, check out La Jolla Surf Systems.

Along with natural beauty and panoramic ocean views, La Jolla also attracts visitors to its world class shopping and great restaurants. A diverse array of upscale boutiques, fine art galleries and exceptional restaurants can be found centered off Prospect Street. Several restaurants stand out, but George's at the Cove is considered one of the top in the San Diego region. Situated above majestic cliffs overlooking the Pacific, the atmosphere at George's is elegant, beautiful and romantic; the cuisine is pure California and positively delightful.

The architecturally significant Brockton Villa Restaurant was one of the first beach cottages in 1894 to be built into the hillside above La Jolla Cove. The bungalow remained in private ownership until 1990 and was beautifully restored as a restaurant. (Note: the shell-inlaid fireplace was built in the 1920s with rare abalone shells.) Another warm reminder of La Jolla's vintage past is the Marine Room, which was originally built in 1916. Located at shorefront level, you can literally enjoy the dramatic view of ocean waves crashing against the restaurant's glass windows! Fresh is a local favorite for California cuisine, and Goldfish Point Cafe is great for coffee and ocean views.

For beautiful beachfront accommodations, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is a wonderful resort for the family. Open since 1935, the hotel offers guest rooms as large as three bedroom suites with full kitchen, located directly on the club's private beach.

Other area attractions: San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego Zoo, Seaworld, Torrey Pines Championship Golf Course, Del Mar Racetrack and Legoland.

Getting There:  From San Diego International Airport to Coronado Island travel time is approximately 15 minutes. To La Jolla, 30 minutes.
